Hiking, biking, and canoeing facilities are available just below Fort Ancient beside the river; upstream, the village of Oregonia has a café. Leave Fort Ancient to the east, past the large Twin Mounds. In the field on the left are traces of the long parallel walls, still visible on aerial photos.
For accommodations along this route, there is Coyote Creek Farm near Hillsboro, with authentic 1800s log cabins on 62 tranquil acres, or the Murphin Ridge Inn in West Union (south, in Adams County), which offers gourmet dining.
East of Hillsboro, watch for the sharply rising edge of the Appalachian Plateau, and the fundamental geological and ecological changes that accompany it. Many of Ancient Ohio's greatest earthwork monuments are clustered along this natural seam, where multiple resources and landscapes could be combined and celebrated.
